Tracking petrogenic hydrocarbons in lakes of the Peace-Athabasca Delta in Alberta, Canada using petroleum biomarkers

The Peace-Athabasca Delta (PAD) receives a mixture of hydrocarbons from biogenic, pyrogenic, and petrogenic processes. Source apportionment in the PAD has focussed on polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), which are ubiquitous environment susceptible to weathering. In contrast, petroleum biomarkers terpanes, hopanes, steranes degradation-resistant organic found uniquely products that can identify input origin (PHCs). We provide an analysis environmentally-relevant PHCs (including n-alkanes, PACs, biomarkers) surficial sediments strategically selected lakes Athabasca Peace deltas adjacent boreal uplands. Alkanes were be predominately biogenic all lakes. PAC sources identified as wood combustion upland lakes, pyrogenic two closed-drainage Delta, flood-prone Using multivariate analyses, raw Alberta oil sands potential source Delta. Biomarkers terpanes hopanes uplands, likely bitumen transported atmospherically. These findings validate use tracers for bituminous lake their paleolimnological investigations at improve understanding relative roles natural industrial processes far-field deposition PHCs.
